According to a statement issued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the US government has ordered that US graphics card manufacturer Nvidia immediately cease selling some of its high-performance chips for artificial intelligence systems to China without licenses.

"On 23 October 2023, the U.S. government notified Nvidia that the licensing requirements of the rule entitled 'Imposition of Additional Export Controls' dated 18 October 2023, applicable to products... developed or sold for data centres, are effective immediately and affect shipments of the company's A100, A800, H100, H800, and L40S products," the company said in a statement.

The US Department of Commerce released a number of new export limitations on semiconductors on October 18. In order to prevent resale to China, the new regulations incorporate preventive measures such as additional license requirements for shipments to more than 40 countries and modify the definitions of advanced processors for artificial intelligence.
