US to impose 25% tariff on goods from Japan and South Korea

US President Donald Trump declared that a 25% tariff on products from Japan and South Korea will take effect on August 1. He released two official letters directed to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Truth Social.

“Starting August 1, 2025, we will apply a tariff of just 25% on all Japanese products coming into the United States, alongside any tariffs specific to certain industries,” reads the letter from the White House to the Prime Minister of Japan.

The message sent to the president of South Korea stated: “Starting August 1, 2025, we will enforce a tariff of just 25% on every Korean product entering the United States, distinct from all sector-specific tariffs. Items that are moved in transit to evade the increased tariff will similarly incur this elevated tariff.”

Trump revealed the increased tariffs in early April, but subsequently postponed the action for 90 days to provide time for negotiating trade deals.

The deadline ends on July 9, and the president has already stated that it will not be prolonged. Throughout that period, the United States successfully completed a trade deal with Vietnam and established framework agreements with China and the United Kingdom.
