In July, US President Donald Trump removed sanctions on Syria. These restrictions existed for many years and were reinforced in 2004 and 2011. Two months prior, all EU sanctions on Syria were removed.

Prior to the commencement of the civil war in 2011, Syria was generating several hundred thousand barrels of oil daily, with its highest level of oil exports occurring in 2002, reaching 380 thousand bpd, as reported by the analytical firm CEIC. Since 2013, the nation's oil output has reached several tens of thousands of barrels daily.
