In the past few weeks, the leader of the White House has indicated support for intensifying economic pressure on the Islamic Republic by blocking ships, such as oil tankers, from departing Iranian ports.  According to Trump, other possibilities such as restarting bombing campaigns or giving up on the conflict present greater dangers for Washington compared to keeping the blockade in place.

The Wall Street Journal mentions that the president is getting conflicting advice on the next steps to take.  Some officials are urging more pressure on Tehran, but others worry that keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed or continuing military actions could harm the American economy and influence the results of the upcoming midterm congressional elections for the Republican Party.

Earlier, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) reported that over 20 ships accumulated in the Iranian port of port of Chah Bahar due to the American blockade.  The military reported that since the start of the operation, US Navy ships and helicopters have intercepted 39 merchant vessels linked to Iran, which were either traveling to or departing from Iranian ports.
