World’s first flight on 100% sustainable jet fuel takes place in Sweden

06/22/2022

The first flight ever utilizing just 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a biofuel generated from food waste, vegetable oils, and animal fats, has been announced by the Swedish regional airline Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA), Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR, and Finnish energy business Neste.

A medium-range ATR 72-600 turboprop flew from Malmö, Sweden, to Stockholm in just over an hour and 20 minutes (approximately 500 km).

Pratt & Whitney engines were specifically installed on the test aircraft by ATR Airlines to run on Neste's environmentally friendly fuel. The businesses plan to approve the fuel and the aircraft for commercial flights by 2025 after the initial testing began last September. By 2030, BRA wants to run all of its flights in Sweden entirely on renewable fuel.
