California to ban unhealthy sweets

Lawmakers in the American state of California want to outlaw unhealthy candies because they contain potentially harmful substances. According to NBC News, the case might not make it to the final stage because of the producers' powerful lobby.

This bill's primary goal is to highlight the unhealthy ingredients in food. The five dubious additives used in candies such as Skittles are being examined, according to officials. The list of potential health dangers includes cancer, immune system and reproductive system damage.

The document has little chance of becoming state law, one of the two lawmakers advocating it adimtted. "The point is to raise the issue of chemicals in such sweets and other products. They have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and other serious health problems," the newspaper noted.

As tests on animals have shown, the substances used in popular American sweets can negatively affect health; studies involving humans have not yet found a definitive answer.
