EU launches a call for tenders for AI gigafactories

On Thursday, the European Commission (EC) issued a call for bids for the establishment of seven AI gigafactories throughout Europe, aiming to enhance European technological independence and transform the continent into an AI hub.

The initiation of the tender call for AI gigafactories marks a significant advancement in achieving our goal of building an AI continent. "Access to the computing capacity of AI gigafactories is strategically essential for Europe as the advancement of artificial intelligence speeds up," stated Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen.

The European Commission's proposals indicate that the industry-driven initiative, backed by as much as €10 billion in EU and national funding, aims to attract a minimum of €20 billion in private investment throughout the EU.

The anticipated AI gigafactories aim to incorporate advanced AI processors, software, cloud technologies, fast connectivity, and energy-efficient data centers. "By collaborating with a European network of 19 AI factories, they aim to enhance Europe's technological leadership, resilience, and strategic independence," forecasts Brussels.

The EC observes that this initiative aims to guarantee Europe "can create advanced artificial intelligence technologies on its own infrastructure, consistent with EU regulations and principles."
