Elon Musk said that by mid-2020, more than a million Tesla cars would be fully self-driving, reports The Wall Street Journal. The founder of Tesla expects that the company will have obtained permission to use unmanned vehicles in several US states by the end of next year.

Introduction of a taxi service will reduce cost of owning a car. According to the company, now a kilometer of traffic by taxi costs Americans $ 2-3, and the price is $ 0.62 for own car. At that, cost of using a robot will be less than 18 cents per kilometer, including cost of consumables.

The unmanned taxi company will supposedly be created from Teslas, which their owners will rent out. The company is going to charge a commission of 25-30% of the trip’s cost, and owners of cars will get the rest. Elon Musk believes that this move will bring $ 30 thousand annually to the cars’ owners, said CNN.

Use of unmanned vehicles is speeding up thanks to information that Tesla collects from cars already released on the road, and uses to optimize the software.

Now, Musk noted, all the Tesla cars produced have built-in equipment that allows them to completely switch to autopilot mode. We are talking about a new hardware and software module FSD (Full Self-Driving) Hardware 3. It allows creating routes along city streets and highways, follow them, recognize markings, road signs, traffic lights, accidents, people, animals and other important objects. At the moment, Tesla autopilot only supports highway driving.

On April 24, Tesla should publish its financial results for the first quarter of 2019. In early April, the company reported a record decline in sales — by 31%. Some are expecting that the upcoming report will be a failure and Elon Musk, in his long tradition, is trying to dilute the upcoming not very positive information background with statements about futuristic projects.
