China remains the largest market for electric and plug-in hybrids, with 1.25 million new vehicles registered there in 2020.

This is more than a third of last year's global figure of 3.18 million. The Chinese market grew by 3% last year, while the global figure increased by 38%.

The growth driver was primarily Europe, with Germany leading the way with about 395,000 vehicles registered last year. Germany also had the biggest increase in sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, up 264%.

The third largest market was the USA with 322 thousand registered vehicles, followed by France (195 thousand), the UK (175 thousand) and Norway (108 thousand). The top ten also includes Sweden (94 thousand), the Netherlands (88 thousand), Italy (60 thousand) and Canada (53 thousand).

The top five manufacturers of electric cars and hybrids include American Tesla, German Volkswagen and BMW, and Chinese SAIC and BYD.
