Microsoft has decided to add three-dimensional user avatars and virtual spaces for collaboration and communication to its Teams video conferencing service, reads a statement on the company's website.

The novelty will use the technology of mixed reality Microsoft Mesh, which was presented earlier this year. It allows users of various devices to be united in one virtual space, the Financial Times notes.

3D avatars can be used in 3D spaces as well as in regular video conferences. Users of the virtual world will be able to share files in Microsoft Office programs, including PowerPoint presentations, Bloomberg points out.

Avatars and three-dimensional workspaces, which in the future will also include replicas of real company offices, are due to appear in Teams in early 2022. According to Microsoft, this will be the first step towards a meta-universe - "a digital world populated by digital twins of people, places and things".
