FT's sources indicate that the upcoming funding round is likely to value Mistral at around €20 billion. According to the FT, Samsung had earlier invested in the startup via its venture capital division and might now invest around €1 billion. Swedish investment company EQT is also in talks to partake in the new round via its Scaleup Europe Fund.
Mistral aims to take advantage of increasing interest from governments and businesses in Europe and Asia in alternatives to prominent US AI models, particularly after the Donald Trump administration restricted access to the latest Anthropic Mythos and Fable models for users beyond the US, according to the FT.
These limitations have ignited growing talks with the concept of "sovereign AI." Mistral develops open-source models that users can customize and manage independently. The FT observes that this method removes the chance of a company or government restricting access.
Mistral's last funding round occurred in September 2025, securing €1.7 billion with a valuation of €12 billion. Most of the financing was provided by the Dutch firm ASML, which utilizes Mistral's models to speed up the creation of intricate machinery employed in chip production. Mistral secured $830 million in debt funding in March 2026 to aid in building Nvidia-powered data centers throughout Europe.
