Tesla, a US company, sold more electric vehicles in the first half of 2023 than Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the top three automakers in Germany, combined, reports Bloomberg.

According to the newspaper’s figures, Tesla sold approximately 890,000 electric vehicles on the world market in the first half of 2023, compared to about 590,000 sold by Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz combined.

Tesla continues to be far ahead of the German automakers in all important markets, according to German analyst Matthias Schmidt, who was quoted by Bloomberg. “Production quantities must increase to a point where producing electric automobiles is profitable.”

Tesla outperforms German automakers even in their own country. In the first half of 2023, the US corporation sold more than 36,000 electric cars in Germany compared to only 12,800 sold by BMW, 16,600 by Mercedes-Benz, and roughly 24,000 by Volkswagen.

The analyst explained that German automakers have had success producing gasoline and diesel vehicles, but the switch to electric vehicles is being stymied by rising inflation, a shortage of skilled labor, and expensive electricity.
